Bone Dance

2007 Merlot Napa Valley

Dice have been with us a long, long time. Early shamans tossed bones to divine the intent of the gods. Homer’s Iliad mentions Theban dice. The Roman legions passed the time in siege by rolling dice on the backs of their shields, betting equipment and food. Richard the Lionheart was a fan of Hazard, which was the name the game had as it made its way to the New World. The game of Craps we know today offers a bettor the best odds against the house. But it’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy of this most sociable casino game, so watch yourself.

Round and balanced from beginning to end. The chewy and mouth-coating tannins create a long finish that is refreshing without showing over-extraction.

Black raspberry, black cherry, black licorice, olives, lavender, earthiness.

The northern section of Napa Carneros is comprised of small valleys that are protected from the cool winds blowing off San Pablo bay. These pockets are warm and create excellent ripening conditions leading to soft and vibrant Merlot. The structure in the 2007 Bone Dance is contributed by the grapes grown in the Stag’s Leap (moderately warm) and Atlas Peak (moderately cool) appellations, as well as by the Cabernet Sauvignon.
